Teenager Discovered Dead After Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One teenage boy was discovered deceased just days after being wrongly blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Accusations Start
The inquest heard how his mother got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if her son was her child. The message added: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the media, claiming her infant's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later determined the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said items was never stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains generated social media responses, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She added that Kai had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely were important to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had entered the house because the resident who lived there had said he could use the toilet anytime he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings learned that one 19-year-old urged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Response
The inquest heard from educational personnel at the local secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been arrested and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang the family's family telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Lead coroner informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the authorities and following his interview he was released while investigations continued."
The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any organization caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his intent."
