Tens of thousands of colorfully attired participants gathered in downtown the city center for the traditional gratitude celebration over the past days.

Annually, festival-goers assemble around sacred natural water sources to give thanks to their divine beings for the fertile landscape that the rainy season have delivered.
"I have participated in Irreecha for the past nine years," mentioned young adult a participant.

Men, females, the senior citizens and the young all take part, ornamented in striking attire and accessories.
They vocalize, move rhythmically, tell tales and place freshly cut foliage and floral arrangements in the water - denoting vitality, rebirth and optimism.
Worldwide Presence
This festival does not only attract individuals from all regions of Ethiopia, guests travel from globally.
"I attended a year ago - it was so good, so spectacular, I brought along my offspring with me this year," said one visitor, originating from abroad.
"It is amazing. All people greets you, everyone wants to give you a kiss and offers greetings."
Festival Program
The opening day of the celebration was held on recently in Addis Ababa. On Sunday, participants journeyed to Bishoftu, a small town near the main city.
While Irreecha has its origins in indigenous faith systems, it is now observed by the bulk of the Oromo people, irrespective of their faith.
Modern Changes
In the last ten years, the figure of participants joining the festival has increased dramatically. This is in part thanks to the growth of digital platforms, where numerous young people capture their attire, traditional dances and singing during the gathering.
Previous Significance
In the previous years, Irreecha was served as a stage for political demonstrations - the Oromo people have historically expressed concerns about political and economic marginalisation.
